Ms. Verna Briggs

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Verna Briggs, who peacefully entered eternal rest on July 22, 2026, at the age of 86. Verna was born on July 14, 1940, and resided in Hammond, Louisiana, where she touched countless lives with her kindness, compassion, and unwavering love. Verna's greatest accomplishment was not measured by awards or recognition, but by the love she freely gave to others. She embraced one of God's greatest gifts by being a devoted mother figure and a helping hand to anyone in need. Her caring spirit, generous heart, and willingness to put others before herself made her a true blessing to all who knew her. Her legacy of love, faith, and selflessness will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. She was a faithful member of Union Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she served on the Usher Board, sang as a member of the Senior Choir, taught Sunday School, worked as a janitor, served as a Class Leader, and lovingly cared for numerous children as a babysitter. Her dedication to her church and community reflected her servant's heart and her deep love for others. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her three children: Donald Briggs, Vernon Briggs, and Stacey Briggs; her three bonus children: Angela Parker-Williams, Jeffery Gatlin, and Wallace Williams; her four grandchildren: La’delrick Briggs, Zakettha Bickham, Scharis Simmons, and Vernon Derborne; her six great-grandchildren: Jayvin Briggs, Khylian Briggs, Derrielle Briggs, Legend Briggs, Lauren Badon, and Sole’ Badon; her three godchildren: Russell Warren, Anthony Miller and Jill Magee; her sisters, Charlene Brumfield and Chris Brumfield; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Verna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wallace Briggs; her maternal parents, Monroe Sr. and Myrtle Lee Brumfield; her brothers, Hermon BrumfieldJr. and Monroe Brumfield Jr.; and her sisters, Josephine Womack, Josie Dean Blackburn, and Willie Bell Garrett. Though our hearts are saddened by her passing, we find comfort in knowing that her life was a testament to love, kindness, and faith. She will forever be remembered for her warm heart, gentle spirit, and the countless lives she blessed. Her memory will remain in our hearts always.
